That week between Christmas and New Year’s Day has kind of an effect on me. I get to wanting to get stuff organized. I deep-cleaned the house, and went all Cath Kidston on the bathroom, knitting a pile of face cloths with crocheted edges that are so cute and so pretty that I’m sure you can understand how I hesitate to use them. Remember this book, in which she edged all her sheets in lace and used a pretty teacup to scoop soap powder into her washing machine? I think about that all the time. Why not have beautiful face cloths? We are totally worth it.
There isn’t any pattern to share, but there’s really no need for one. I simply picked out a cotton yarn in fingering or sport weight, cast on a few stitches, and knitted in whatever stitch pattern seemed interesting until it was a square. Then I bound it off and crocheted on an edging. I think I used a US 4 needle for all these, and a US F hook for the edgings. The yarns I used are all from the stash and some have lost their labels—it is mostly Tahki Cotton Classic Light. When one was done, I put it on the pile and started another.
I think this might be one of those ongoing projects that lasts until the big bag of cotton yarn runs out. Making everyday life nice in 2014!
I love them! I always knit dishcloths and facecloths to give as gifts and never make them for myself. As I was wrapping gifts, I thought that they were so pretty that I started making some for myself. Happy New Year!
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year to you and yours, and my fond wishes for a year filled with love, family, happy times, and, of course, cozy things.
ReplyDeleteI know just what you mean, I feel a kind-of spring cleaning fever coming over me. I've been looking at loads of CK inspired pics on pinterest and am feeling all lacy and rosy all of a sudden! :) Love those cloths....gorgeous! Happy New Year! xx
ReplyDeleteA very pretty start to the new year! xx
ReplyDeleteHi Kristen
ReplyDeleteYour little dishcloths are so pretty. I can complete understand where you are coming from in not even really wanting to use them !! I had a serious bout of dishcloth obsession back in November as you can see from this post

And yes, you are totally worth it !
Happy New Year,

Aww so cute and lovely! I may have to snag this idea. I make cloths for everyone else as random gifts and never make any for us!

These are just delightful and the colours are lovely. I've been suffering serious washcloth envy but have only made one as a gift.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you Kristen, let's love 2014 wonderfully and we'll full of colour and loveliness x Penny

Well why shouldn't everyday life be brighted up by such lovely facecloths:)
ReplyDeleteHappy colours!
Love them, of course. Why not have a little homemade luxury? Jo x
ReplyDeleteThey are really pretty. I've been meaning to do this for awhile. Well, crocheted ones, my knitting is not good enough yet. A teacup for the soap powder sounds pretty wonderful.
ReplyDeleteThese are so pretty! Love them!
ReplyDeleteOh they are lovely, clever you. Like you say, almost too nice to use. But you can always make more I am sure.
ReplyDeleteI love hand knitted and crocheted dish cloths and face washers.
ReplyDeleteI started making my own 3 years ago now. Soon they became so popular amoungst friends and family that I started to sell them too!
So girly and pretty. :) I also make crochet facecloths for myself and to give as gifts. Here is a pretty way that I display them and make them for gifts. Crochet or knit your square and your edging. Lay the cloth out flat and fold it accordion style. Lay the accordion on its edge after folding and place a bar of soap in the center. (optional) Then just bring up both sides around the bar of soap and tie with a pretty ribbon. Viola! A sweet gift and a little pretty-up for the bathroom. Here is a photo of one that I made for myself.

Happy New Year, penny x
What a good idea - because, after all, it's the everyday that makes up your life. I have my "best undies day" - usually a Sunday. My partner commented I should buy 7 so that every day is a best undies day. I think I will!
ReplyDeleteI love your plan to "make every day nice in 2014". Any why not? You can always enjoy making more! They are very pretty and will make washing up something to look forward to. My kids have toothbrushes that play their favourite songs. Whatever brightens our day, right? Happy New Year. Looking forward to all your projects this year! Thanks for writing :)
ReplyDeleteYour face cloths are so pretty! Great ♥

Pretty and practical, Kristen. I have one pattern I have knit many dishcloths from in the 44 years I have been knitting dishcloths, but your examples encourage me to be more daring :) Thanks!
ReplyDeleteLove them! I use a teacup in my flour as a scoop. Happy New Year!

They are lovely! Might use this to test stitch patterns, so much more rewarding than frogging afterwards!
ReplyDeleteOooh these are so pretty with the crochet edging. I have a pile of crocheted washcloths sitting in a bowl on the counter in the bathroom. I'm not done "looking" at them yet. When I am, then I guess I'll start using them.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful!
ReplyDeleteThey are so lovely I wouldn't let them anywhere near my bathroom, although an incentive to get the children to wash their faces maybe? Thanks for sharing and best wishes for 2014, Claire x
ReplyDeleteoohh these are so pretty. What a wonderful way to inject some colour in to the bathroom
ReplyDeleteHi Kristen - Happy New Year!!! Beautiful face cloths and an antique cup to use for washing powder.....where's the problem? It's the little things in life that make us smile..... xxx
ReplyDeleteMuy lindo!!!! Feliz Año 2014!!
ReplyDeleteOh how pretty your facecloths with the fancy edge turned out. I want to be able to make them too. However I have been trying to learn to crochet for two years and for some reason I am all thumbs. I have never tried knitting. Is it any easier? Blessings, Carolyn
ReplyDeleteI don't find either one easier than the other, but you may. It doesn't hurt to try, right? I say give knitting a shot, and keep trying with crochet, too. :)
DeleteLovely idea for new projects :) Really :)
ReplyDeleteHave a good new year!
Jolana
